Optoma has announced the UHZ35 laser gaming projector, a long-throw version of its previously released UHZ35ST short-throw projector, at considerably less cost.

The UHZ35, now out at a street price of $1,699, comes in $500 cheaper than the UHZ35ST, which was released in September 2023 and reviewed by ProjectorCentral last December. At the time, it was a reasonably well-performing laser projector whose greatest strengths were its compact and lightweight form factor—approximately 10.8 x 4.5 x 8.5 inches and 6.6 pounds—and image lag as low at 4.4 milliseconds for gaming.

The new UHZ35 is essentially the same projector in virtually all respects but one besides price: it is outfitted with a 1.6X manual zoom lens with a 1.4:1-2.24:1 throw ratio, instead of the ST version's fixed 0.5:1 lens. It will produce a 100- to 120-inch image from about 10 feet throw distance, while the ST version does 100-inches from 3 feet, 7 inches. The UHZ35 image size ranges from about 26 inches to 302 inches diagonal with a 16:9 aspect ratio.

Key features include a 3,500 ANSI-lumen rated Duracore sealed and dust-resistant (IP6X) laser engine rated for up to 30,000 hours in Eco power mode, though we measured just 2,536 lumens max on the ST model in its brightest mode. The 4K DLP design uses the newer 0.65-inch 1920x1080 DMD vs. the oft-used 0.47-inch chip, but still with four-phase XPR pixel-shifting to achieve 3840x2160 resolution on screen. The projector is compatible with HDR10 and HLG high dynamic range content, and tops out at Rec.709 gamut. We measured 95% Rec.709 in the short-throw sister model, and 75% DCI-P3. Both models also support 1080p 3D projections with the addition of DLP-Link glasses.

PC gaming is supported up to 1080p/240Hz, which yields super-fast 4.4 ms input lag. 4K/60Hz signals are rated for 17 ms, and 1080p/120Hz should deliver about 8.6 ms of latency.

Connectivity is the same on both UHZ35 models, notably featuring eARC on one of its two HDMI ports for feeding an outboard digital audio system, as well as WiSA compliance that makes the projector compatible with wireless home theater speakers built to that standard.
