Optoma has announced availability of the UHZ55 laser projector, a follow-up for its UHZ50, a 2021 model that was then ground-breaking among home entertainment projectors for its laser engine and gamer-friendly low input lag.

Optoma UHZ55 main

Like its predecessor, the UHZ55 is a 4K single-chip DLP model using TI's 0.47-inch chipset with 4-phase XPR pixel-shifting. The laser light source is rated the same at 3,000 ANSI lumens, in this case from the company's DuraCore engine spec'd for up to 30,000 hours in Eco mode. It also carries along the earlier projector's Enhanced Gaming Mode offering 16.9 millisecond input lag for 4K/60 Hz signals and compatibility with 1080p/240 Hz signals from gaming PCs with response time as low as 4 ms.

The UHZ55 is a standard-throw projector with a 1.3X manual zoom offering a 1.21:1 to 1.59:1 throw ratio, with a commensurate projection distance of approximately 47 inches to 26.6 feet; the 16:9 image size is spec'd at approximately 34 to 302 inches diagonal. Adding setup flexibility are up to +10% vertical lens shift, and ±30% vertical and horizontal keystone correction as well as 4-corner correction and warping.

Designed for home theater/entertainment viewing as well as gaming, the UHZ55 is a smart projector with integrated dual-band WiFi that uses the Optoma Marketplace streaming platform with apps that include Amazon Prime and supports wireless mirroring from PCs and personal devices via the company's Creative Cast app. It also offers compatibility with Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands, as well as Google Home compliance for control via the Google Home app. The projector touts HDR10 playback with the option of employing a DCI-P3 WCG (wide color gamut) mode, as well as HLG. Furthermore, the UHZ55 is compatible with 1080p 3D content, a feature that we see less frequently today in new consumer projectors but which Optoma continues to support.

Optoma UHZ55 connections

The projector offers a generous connection panel with three HDMI 2.0 ports. A pair of built-in 10-watt speakers are available for audio, though one of the HDMI ports is equipped with eARC for sending signals of up to Dolby Atmos quality back to an audio system or soundbar. Three USB-A ports are available, one for powering dongles or other devices and two compatible with a built in media player for content delivered via thumb drive. Optical digital audio and 3.5 mm stereo analog audio outputs are provided, and control ports include a 12V trigger output, an RJ-45 LAN connection, and RS232C. There is also a 3D Sync connection for an outboard emitter.

The Optoma UHZ55 is available now from popular online retailers for $2,499.

Hard to believe its 2024 they’re still using 7 yr old chip tech and HDMI 2.0 (spec finalized ~10yrs ago)

Like mentioned above still using this very outdated technology, USB ports are when worse, USB 2 is 24 years old!

The BenQ 4550i has almost exactly the same specs but uses the more modern, higher-end 0.65-inch DMD DLP chipset. It also has a much higher vertical lens ship (60% vs. 10%) and horizontal lens shift, which seems to be missing from the Optoma.

Add all that to Optoma's poor reputation currently and even with the extra $500, the 4550i seems like the easy choice.

Why did they release this with hdmi 2.0?? And only 60fps on 4k? This is not an upgrade from the model released almost 2 years ago, it's the same thing! Also FYI probably still doesn't support 4k pure motion unless it's 24p. Or 1080p. 4k30 and 4k60 don't work with pure motion. And according to the manual HLG is only for hdmi 1 and 2. So no pure motion with hlg. I own the uhz50. If you are eye balling this just get a UHZ50 by now the price should save you 1k.
